The eighth volume in the "Batman Chronicles" series shows us 1943 from Batman and Robin's perspective. The stories here deal a lot with World War II and provide today's reader with some interesting insights into the mind of America in another age. There are some portrayals of Japanese and German soldiers that might be considered offensive today, but back then they were cartoon enemies for Batman to beat up. Afterward he speaks directly to the reader to tell us about our duty to buy war bonds. It's pure propaganda, both interesting and entertaining.

If you don't have any of the previous volumes, this would be a good one to start out with. It has a good selection of villains including the Penguin, Catwoman, Joker and Scarecrow, as well as the aforementioned Nazi and Japanese soldiers, and of course plenty of generic mobsters.

The colors and pages are crisp and vibrant. There might be an issue with them yellowing over time but I don't think the colors will change, just the white borders. There are no extras, introductions or afterwords. DC isn't spending much on production and they aren't charging us much either. I'd say it's a fair deal.

This volume contains the Batman stories from:

Batman #14 and #15
Detective Comics #'s 71-74
World's Finest Comics #8 and #9
