I've been out of the comic loop for a long time. Especially DC comics. Trades are great since I have no comic book shops local to me and I like nice big volumes to take in and digest over a long afternoon.

Batman: Hush is great in regards to letting you get back into the mind of the Bat. Hush, him(or her)self, is a great villain that is well done and there is also a good number of cameos by other mainstays and a twisted ending to the whole thing to boot!

I highly, highly recommend it to new or longtime Batman fans. I feel you won't be disappointed.

I'm not much of a comics reader, but Batman is easily my favorite character (although I'm in the minority who have found his live-action adaptations to be disappointing). And this particular collection is THE comic book for people who don't often read comic books.

Only a passing knowledge of Batman lore is needed to enjoy the story, and virtually all of the characters in his history make appearances of varying degrees. The highlight is his battle of wits with Superman, and seeing the famous contrast in styles between the two characters at work here, both as combatants and allies. It makes one desperately wish they'd make a live-action crossover film (and while one almost did get made before these current reboots, it seems unlikely now, save for the upcoming Justice League film). There are also some great interactions here between Clark, Bruce, and Lois.

Jim Lee's style can be a bit too technical and lacking in character, but I'm still a fan of his clean, dynamic style, and it's great to see it applied to the Batman world. His Catwoman/Selina is particularly memorable. The way all the characters are shoehorned into the story can come off as contrived in some regards, but for the most part it works and makes for a highly entertaining adventure.

When you say something has it all, you normally overlook a few items. This is not the case when you read Hush and look at all of the elements. Storywise, you have everything you could ask for from Batman and a little more. There are the romantic elements that combine with the prolific Batman elements of yore, not to mention the thing that always hides somewhere inside a great storyline. There are the twists and the turns, the places where you think "I didn't see that coming," and the things that make you feel for Batman. There are also the things that the bat stands against - every great Batman book has had some of these in them, and this is a beautiful example of exactly why Gotham needs Batman but why Bruce might not always need the Bat.

As far as some of the elements go, I really liked seeing the needs of Bruce that are thrown aside because of the needs of Gotham. People sometimes try to encapsulate these in stories, but they oftentimes come off looking like forced material in stories that don't need them. Here, however, there is no forced timing and there is just enough of the Batman needing to make people see.

As far as needs, there are also times that address the needs of others. The shadow of the Bat has to be one that is hard to step outside of, as we see whenever Wayne tries to have anything. But the people around him - his "sidekicks" - what about them? These are also looked at and we see how damaging these can be - both for B.W. and for the people that he cares about.

As far as Hush - I'll let the story speak for that piece of the puzzle. Hush fits in beautifully and you need that if you are going to have a nicely articulated piece of Batman lore.

And Jim Lee - what can I really say to get the point across about the art? The style fits perfectly in the world it is illustrating, pointing out both the cold and the vile and the other moments that some artists oftentimes leave out. When you take both of these and you combine them, you have something that goes beyond remembering and puts it in the selections that you like to pull out and examine more than once.

This is not a book that just appeals to fans of the series. This is a book that has something to say and that says it well. I fear spoiling anything so I leave the rest to readers to find, noting that I know many people who do not like this type of work and still could not find the words to really do Hush justice.

This book is absolutely excellent. The mystery of who is Hush is prevalent throughout the book. Catwoman looks incredibly sexy. Loeb once again returns to Batman's noir roots. At the end of the book, you will be wondering, who really is Hush? The artwork is some of the better I have seen. I am absolutelyy in love with Jim Lee. Buy it immediately, it isn't something you can miss.
